Brittany Rober

SOLO EXHIBITION

Artist Statement

This group of paintings was done with acrylic paint, magazines, and the fur of my four-legged studio assistants. I have always struggled with sitting still and being patient. Trusting the process makes my skin crawl on some days. Fluid art/acrylic pouring has been a great technique for me to combine some of my favorite things in a relatively quick way – colors and nature (dry time not included). I have been experimenting with pours for around four years now.

It probably goes without saying that I love National Geographic magazine. Many of the snips in these pieces were taken from Nat Geo’s throughout the years (my collection goes back to the 40’s.) I have also used old calendars and other vintage magazines. I like adding magazine snips because it brings some extra life to the painting.

Biography

I am Brittany Rober and I am 31 years old. I grew up in Indiana and moved to Lexington with my husband in 2014 so we could finish school. In 2016, I graduated with a shiny bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Sustainability studies from the University of Kentucky. When my husband graduated with his masters, we bought a house in the country so our dogs and cats could have the yard they deserve and make all the skunk and other small rodent friends you can imagine (they are lucky I love nature). Last year, after five years of the corporate 9-5, ironically in oil and gas, I quit my job to focus on things that bring joy to my life – pets, plants, and painting. But neither the pets nor the plants have jobs so I also clean houses.

I have always enjoyed creating all kinds of art. As a kid, I traveled everywhere with a sketchbook and a bag of pens and markers. That still holds true today if I am going to be in the car for longer than an hour. In high school, every elective was an art class. Even time I was supposed to be in other classes was spent in those rooms. I took that enthusiasm right into college and took two years of graphic design courses. Then I found myself in a geology lesson and everything changed. For whatever reason, I was under the impression that people with the inside scoop on rocks were in higher demand than artists so I started down that path. And also because Earth science and the natural world are absolutely fascinating. Whether I’m writing, doodling, painting, or crafting, as I have grown, I’ve found a way to incorporate nature into my art and enjoy the best of both worlds.

This gallery is my first time sharing anything I’ve created with anyone other than my closest people. It has been fun learning so many new things about something I already enjoy so much. I am excited to keep creating, try new things, and see what else I can do!
